Trails End — In Pursuit of the Elusive Trophy Northwoods Buck

Back To The North Woods.
Back To Tradition.
Back To Trails End.

Time stands still in this part of Maine. Each fall over the last 50-plus years, we’ve returned to Two Falls Camps in pursuit of the elusive North Woods Buck.

Hunting here requires more patience than in other parts of the nation where Whitetail Deer roam in numbers and co-exist in backyards across America. Here in the North Woods, you’re not looking for numbers…you’re looking for a chance to dance with a True North Woods Beast capable of roaming 10 square miles in a single week. But when skill and luck intersect, these massive animals are often over 200 pounds on foot.

It’s about untouched woods, unincumbered by trespassing signs. It’s about the smell of the soft woods, uniquely Maine. It’s about a place where time seems to stand still. It’s about remembering earlier versions of yourself and reflecting on how you’ve grown, and on who and what really matter in life. And it’s about forging the bonds of family and friends over a fire. Yes, it’s about the people. The kill…that’s the bonus.

This Is Trails End.

Gear Review

Several years ago, we started using a product called WyndScent. Rather than traditional liquid scents that freeze in colder climates, WyndScent utilizes vaporizing technology. You can set the vaporizer to scent every one or three minutes, or you can utilize a key fob to call for it on demand. Seeing a cloud of scent vaporize into the North Woods give you hope it’s reaching your intended target. I’ve had several situations where doe meandered by my tree stand, relaxed.

Try Felt Sole Inserts For Longer Sits!

Last year, I picked up a tip from legendary Big Woods Bucks tracker, Hal Blood: FELT SOLE INSERTS! They are more comfortable and they are significantly better at retaining heat. You can pick up a pair on Amazon for less than $20.

Know Your Ballistics

In the North Woods of Maine, you will likely get just one squeeze of the trigger to make a lifetime memory. Don’t squander it by blowing your shot. Whether you’re shooting the all-powerful 30-06, the classic lever-action Big Woods 30-30, or the light but deadly 7MM-08…KNOW BEFORE YOU GO.

The Federal Ballistics Calculator lets you see exactly where you should be based on the distance of your shot. It’s easy to use and covers all of the classic Whitetail cartridges.
